Have you been through a breakup that “came out of nowhere”? Well, the truth is: it was planned, there were signs; you just couldn’t recognise them. Your partner was quietly quitting on you. Quiet quitting is when your partner is distancing themselves from the relationship without actually ending it. When your partner is trying to quit on you quietly, a lack of effort is the most obvious sign. They don’t call or make plans to see you. However, there are also some subtle yet undeniable signs that you can’t ignore. So, to save you from the shock and misery of being dumped out of the blue, here are a few quiet quitting signs you shouldn’t ignore.

Lack of intimacy

This is one of the most obvious signs of quiet quitting in a relationship. A constant denial of intimacy in any relationship is a major red flag. And this is especially obvious if there is no reason behind it. If your partner is constantly declining your polite offer for some sexy time, for no reason, and refuses to discuss the problem, you know what’s coming next.

They keep arguing, or do not argue at all

If your boyfriend pulls arguments out of thin air like a magician, babe, he’s falling out of love with you. However, the opposite is true for women. If she has stopped arguing with you altogether and just agrees to whatever nonsense you say, the relationship is over.

They do not motivate you

This might not seem very obvious, but it’s a good way to seal your doubts. If you think they have been distancing themselves from you, just rant to them about how you want to do so much in life but aren’t able to. If they agree with your dumb excuses and don’t motivate or push you to be better, it’s because they don’t care. They are no longer bothered about where you go in life because they aren’t joining you for the journey.

Small talk all the way

You might not be having deep conversations about geopolitics and the arts, and that’s fine. But if the only conversation you have is a one-line answer to “How was your day?” and “What are you doing?”, that’s a problem. Even the fun banter, ridiculous conversations, and gossip sessions are important. If all this has been missing and you talk like polite neighbours, things aren’t fine, even if your partner says otherwise.

They don’t get jealous

No matter how secure they are, your partner’s ears will perk up the moment you mention someone from the opposite gender in a good light. But if they have no reaction to the story of how your colleague Rahul rescued you in a meeting, a breakup is on the way.

Zero enquiry

It’s okay if you don’t ask each other about your day, every day. But if they don’t enquire when you’re missing for hours, or when you say you’re going out, this isn’t a good sign. They don’t care where you’re going or what you’re doing, which means they are losing interest in you.

“You can do better than me”

This might be a bit debatable, but hear me out. Your partner feeling overwhelmingly grateful and saying, “You can do better than me”, is fine, even good sometimes. But if this phrase becomes a part of your conversation quite often without the undertone of gratitude, they are literally warning you. They are explicitly saying that you go and find someone else because they clearly have.

A breakup is always hurtful, whether you see it coming or not, but these quiet quitting signs will help you prepare yourself when the storm comes. Or even better, see the signs and play an UNO reverse on them.
