We all have our favourite snacks with drinks besides the regular peanuts. Pizza with beer, pasta with wine, and so on are among some delicious alcohol and food pairings. But here’s the sober truth that no one tells you. Some lip-smacking food and alcohol combos can also cause an unbearable hangover you’ll regret later. So, if you don’t want your hangover to feel like the worst punishment, here are some food items you should avoid with alcohol.

1. Beans and lentils

You should never eat beans and lentils with wine or beer. Rich in protein, fibre, and complex carbs, beans and lentils are healthy for your gut when eaten alone. But they lead to indigestion and severe bloating if you have alcohol with them.
2. Chocolate

Rum brownies, Irish whisky tiramisu, and other such food items are infused with alcohol, so why should you not drink while eating chocolate? It’s because such food items are usually baked and contain alcohol for flavour, not to intoxicate you. But if you eat them in excessive amounts, or have milk chocolate while sipping on an alcoholic drink, things can go south. Sugar and cocoa, paired with alcohol, can trigger headaches, indigestion, and a sugar crash.
3. Caffeine

Coffee-infused cocktails might sound like a great combo, but they’re actually bad for you. Coffee, a stimulant, interferes with alcohol’s depressant effects. Espresso martinis, caffeinated rum punch and other such cocktails can make you feel less drunk than you really are. This will make you drink more alcohol and give you a hangover that can be difficult to handle. The combination of caffeine and alcohol can also cause gastrointestinal issues.
4. Tomato-based foods

Do you love to eat red sauce pasta or a Marinara pizza while drinking? Either switch to a different food item or step away from that glass. Tomato-based foods are acidic in nature, which can lead to indigestion, acid reflux, or heartburn when paired with alcohol.
5. Foods containing excessive salt and soy sauce

Salted chips, French fries, and pretzels with diverse dips paired with beer might sound like heavenly combos, but they aren’t. Salts and soy sauce trigger your thirst, so you might end up drinking more alcohol than you planned. This dehydrates you quicker, leading to an even worse hangover. Do you have health issues related to high blood pressure? The high sodium content in salty food can also raise your blood pressure temporarily when paired with alcohol.
6. Breads

Thinking of ordering pizza and beer? Think again. The yeast in both bread and beer can lead to bloating and indigestion. This combination can also spike your blood sugar, leaving you too tired to even move. So, if you’re drinking beer, skip the extra buns and go for lighter snacks like grilled veggies and nuts.
