We can make all the scientific and economic advancements in the world, bachche, but till women’s safety in India is not taken seriously, we will never be a first-world nation. Go ahead, get all offended, but this is the reality. Look at our South Delhi folks’ reactions only when they go to Europe for their annual summer vacation. Most of them can’t get over the fact that women can roam around at all hours of the day or night and no one bothers them. In India, on the other hand, we think of women’s safety as a luxury instead of a basic human right.

“Went for a walk, ended up getting stalked and traumatised”

At every Diwali card party this year, men will cry themselves hoarse about Donald Trump, Putin, tariffs, China, Pakistan, and everything else except the safety and security of women in their own neighbourhood. Because woh toh “women’s issues” ho gaye na. Busy men can’t be bothered with “women’s issues”. Meanwhile, stories like this woman’s horrifying tale become more and more common.

But, but…#NotAllMen

Feminism aims to make such stories a thing of the past. But aapka dimaag #NotAllMen ke aage badhta hi nahi hai. As I have said before, I’m sure all men are not predators, but every woman I know has been harassed by men. Make of that what you will because education ka time khatam ho chuka hai, women are as cautious as they can be, and we have been saying the same thing over and over again for decades. Now, men have to take some responsibility for their own kind. Instead of inventing yet another pocket-sized weapon for women to carry.

In a land that worships goddesses, women can’t even step out of their house for a walk. If that doesn’t wake you up to the reality of women’s safety in India, nothing can.
