Sourdough bread is made of fermented starter, a yeast element that is prepared over a week. But you can also get a readymade sourdough starter if you want to skip the hassle and make the bread in just 1-2 days. Follow this easy recipe to make sourdough bread at home using a readymade starter.

Ingredients:

1.5 cups lukewarm water

1 tbsp sugar or honey

3 cups maida (refined flour)

1 cup wheat flour

2 tsp instant sourdough starter

1.5 tsp salt

Dutch oven (a cast-iron casserole)

Method:

In a bowl, add lukewarm water, instant sourdough starter, and honey or sugar. Mix the ingredients and let them sit for 10 minutes until frothy. In another bowl, add wheat flour and maida. Pour the prepared starter mixture and add salt and olive oil. Mix the ingredients well until a fluffy dough forms. Knead the dough on the kitchen shelf for 7-8 minutes until smooth.

Grease the bowl with olive oil and place the dough in it. Let it rise for 2-3 hours until doubled. Take the dough, stretch it and shape it into a round loaf. Let it rest for 45 mins. Repeat the process thrice. Now, take the dough and place it in a proofing basket. Cover the basket and let the dough rise for 45-60 minutes. After this, place the dough on parchment paper in a bowl. Make small knots on the front side of the dough and cover the bowl with a cloth. Place the bowl in the fridge for cold fermentation for about 16-24 hours.

How to bake the sourdough

Preheat the oven to 450° F (230° C) with a Dutch oven inside. Transfer the refrigerated dough to a Dutch oven. Using a razor blade or a sharp knife, make a quick slash into the dough, at least 1/4 inch deep. Cover the Dutch oven with a lid and bake the dough for 25 minutes. Uncover the lid, and then bake it again for 15-20 minutes until crispy and golden. Let the sourdough bread cool for at least an hour before slicing. Store the sourdough bread at room temperature and consume it within 3-4 days.
