Every year, a full moon in the month of Ashadha brings with it a deeply spiritual and heart-warming celebration of Guru Purnima. In 2025, Guru Purnima will be celebrated on July 10, and as always, it will be a day to honour those who have led us from darkness to light. Whether it’s a school teacher who patiently taught you algebra, a yoga instructor who helped you find your balance, or a spiritual guru who guided your soul, Guru Purnima is about expressing heartfelt gratitude to those who’ve shaped our minds, our morals, and our journeys.
Why do we celebrate Guru Purnima?

Guru Purnima has roots in both Hindu and Buddhist traditions, and its significance goes beyond religion — it’s about the universal respect for wisdom and learning.
In the Hindu tradition, the day marks the birth anniversary of Ved Vyasa, the sage who composed the Mahabharata and compiled the four Vedas. He is considered the Adi Guru, the original teacher. Devotees pay homage to Vyasa and their personal gurus for imparting spiritual and practical knowledge.
However, in Buddhism, Guru Purnima is the day when Lord Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath after obtaining enlightenment. This day set the wheel of Dharma in motion.
The word ‘Guru’ itself is profound

Guru is a Sanskrit word, comprising two parts: Gu, meaning “darkness”, and Ru, meaning “remover.” So, a guru is someone who removes any kind of darkness from our lives. Even your life coach, boss, or a grandparent who has passed on their wisdom can be your guru. The spirit of the day is about honouring anyone who has helped you grow into who you are today.
Guru Purnima is a reminder to thank the people who’ve guided you through tough times. It could be the therapist who held space for you when you were at your lowest. Or a podcast host whose words changed the way you see yourself. This day is about acknowledging influence with gratitude.
This festival reminds us to slow down and acknowledge the people who have lit our path. In an age where we Google everything and take pride in doing it alone, this celebration is a soft nudge to remember that wisdom is often a gift passed down, not self-made. So this Guru Purnima, take a moment. Make that call. Send that text. Or just say a quiet thank you to the person who helped you see the light when everything felt dim.
Happy Guru Purnima 2025!
