We spoke to Mumbai-based Vastu consultant Isha Sinhal for tips on the proper placement of a work desk at home. Here’s what she suggests.

You might have nailed the work-from-home corporate look, but is your work setup perfect too? “Your home environment directly influences your mindset and results,” Isha says. “A Vastu-aligned workspace supports decisiveness, financial flow, and mental clarity.” But a poorly placed work area can lead to procrastination, miscommunication, and low energy, according to Isha. So, what is the right way to set up a home office?

Ideal Vastu directions to place an office desk

Whether you’re employed, freelancing, or running your own business from home, your work desk needs to be in the right place. Isha suggests placing it in the North for career growth and financial stability. Keeping your office desk in the East helps in building social connections. An office desk placed in the Southwest helps you gain authority in your field of work, according to Isha. This is a helpful Vastu tip if you’re seeking business growth. 

Work from home: The direction you should face, according to Vastu

If you’re a remote employee, student or freelancer, Isha suggests facing the North or Northeast. “East is also suitable for people working in creative fields, education, or government work,” she says. Isha warns against facing the South or Southwest while working. This might cause stress, leading to missed opportunities and financial instability. 

Working from home has several perks, like sitting comfortably on the sofa or your bed with your laptop. But does Vastu approve? “A separate room, especially in the West, North, or North-East zones, is ideal for working from home”, Isha says. If a separate room isn’t possible, you can choose a quiet corner in one of these zones to stay focused. Apart from ideal work desk directions, the Vastu expert also highlights following the right décor in your home office.

Are you setting up your workstation at home? The use of the right colours, wall art designs, and certain indoor plants impacts your work environment. Follow these Vastu tips by Isha Sinhal to boost productivity. 

“Use light blue, green or white colours in your home office to promote calmness, clarity and growth,” the Vastu consultant says. Isha also suggests using vivid wall art designs that reflect your goals. “Use motivational quotes, clear vision boards, or images that reflect ambition, purpose, and achievement.” You can place small indoor plants, such as lucky bamboo, jade plant, or a money plant, in the North or East to support focus and progress, Isha recommends.

How to fix Vastu doshas in work-from-home setups

Is your home office desk too close to the kitchen or bathroom? Isha cautions against working in such a setup, as the kitchen is linked to fire and the bathroom to waste. This can disturb your focus, energy, and decision-making. “Use a wooden partition or tall storage unit to slightly divide the zones and reduce energy conflict,” Isha says. But what if this is not possible in your case?

If unavoidable, try to sit in the West zone facing the East. Isha also suggests placing a salt bowl, camphor, or Vastu pyramid near your workspace to absorb negativity and maintain energetic hygiene. 

Vastu remedies for freelancers struggling with motivation

While working from home can be relaxing, people often feel unmotivated to accomplish tasks. Are you facing a similar issue? Isha suggests some Vastu remedies to keep you focused and energetic. 

“Keep a Nandi idol in the Southwest facing Northeast to bring strength and perseverance. Place a Kuber idol in the North to activate wealth and opportunity,” she says. You must also keep your work desk clutter-free to improve your concentration. “Place a Pyrite crystal or Citrine near your workspace for financial clarity and focus,” Isha recommends.
