The Maha Kumbh Mela, one of the most significant religious events for Hindus, occurs once every 12 years. This period relates to Jupiter’s revolution around the Sun while meeting each zodiac sign. It is celebrated at four sacred places in India – Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik, and Ujjain. Kumbh Mela is observed for 45 days in India. But why is the Maha Kumbh Mela such a big event in 2025?
Why The Maha Kumbh Mela Is More Significant In 2025

2025 is the 144th year of the Maha Kumbh Mela. This Kumbh is special because of a rare celestial event this year where the Sun, the Moon, Saturn, and Jupiter are all aligned. But do you know why Hindus celebrate Maha Kumbh in the first place?
The eventful story of Maha Kumbh

Ancient Hindu scriptures reveal an interesting tale behind the Kumbh Mela. Kumbh, a pitcher, relates to Lord Dhanvantri’s pot of amrita, an immortality nectar he wanted to give to the Devas (gods). However, one day, asuras (demons) were troubling the gods by churning the ocean to get hold of the pot. This event is widely known as Samudra Manthana. That’s when Lord Indra’s son, Jayant, ran towards the pot to save it from the demons. Simultaneously, the Sun, his son Shani (Saturn), Brihaspati (Jupiter), and the Moon followed the pot for the same reason. This havoc broke the pot with its drops falling at four places – Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik, and Ujjain. It is said that, at the time, several saints were camping in these four places. This is also why Hindu saints worldwide gather at these spots to celebrate Maha Kumbh even to this day.
How is Maha Kumbh celebrated?

Devotees celebrate Maha Kumbh by taking a dip in the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati at the Triveni Sangam, where all three rivers meet. The bhakts believe that bathing in the holy water will absolve their sins and pave the way for their moksha (liberation). This ritual is called shahi snan, a royal bath. Maha Kumbh in 2025 will be celebrated from January 13 to February 26. Pilgrims will have the chance to take four shahi snans in this timeline.
